History of the Chung Yings
Being Britain’s Second city, Birmingham had the chance to sample Chinese food for a long time. However the food on offer wasn’t exactly authentic, it was more of food designed for the "Yet-To-Be-Cultured" English taste. "Chop Suey", "Sweet & Sour" and Curries were usually top of the popularity list in most establishments.
It wasn’t until 1981 before a proper Chinese restaurant that was suitable for both Chinese and "Westeners" was opened in Birmingham. Chung Ying Cantonese Restaurant was borned. Situated in what is now the "Heart of Chinatown", they are the first to offer Genuine and Traditional Cantonese food. (Cantonese is a style of Chinese cooking, typical of Hong Kong taste as well as many regions of China.)
Here, the success story began.
With an impressive menu of over 300 dishes, the restaurant gave the chance to the people of Birmingham to enjoy Chinese food like they never had before. They became fascinated with all the weird and wonderful fare that was on offer. For a change, they had come to a restaurant with a choice, a choice so different to any other restaurants they had previously encountered.
The Word soon got around the City! It was not long after, when it was first recognised by the "AA" Good Food Guide. Having won countless of awards year after year, Chung Ying was and still is THE Chinese Restaurant in the Midlands.
"Old" Chung Ying (as it is affectionately known) is situated in a listed building on the corner of Wrottesley Street and Ladywell Walk. It had seating capacity of over 200 people and was easily the largest in Birmingham.
Back then, the area was a typical run-down inner city industrial estate, the only attraction being the lesser known Hippodrome Theatre. Now the area has blossomed into the "West-End" of Birmingham, having shops, cafes, nightclubs, pubs, restaurants, cinema and even a casino!
With popularity of Chinese on the increase, Chung Ying Garden was opened. Established since 1987, it offers the customer a softer and classier alternative. For a long time, Chinese Restaurants had been seen as just an eating place, People wanting a bit of class or romance would go to, say, a French restaurant. Now that gap in the market has been filled. Situated in the former "Thorp Street Army Barracks", the restaurant has a capacity of over 350 people. It is particularly Popular with Businessmen, whether they want to hold business meetings, Private Functions, Office Parties or just simply impressing clients who's new in Town.
Cuisine here is similar to her sister, the only difference being the choice. It’s much more. As well as the normal "A La Carte" Menu, there is also Banquet Menus and a Special Menu, designed to suit the taste of the Chinese public. This Chinese menu, designed by our very experienced head chef, is probably THE Most Comprehensive in Britain.
