A Birmingham Chinese restaurant has the very best dumplings in the UK according to an industry award body. Chung Ying Cantonese in Brum's Chinese Quarter was given a trophy for having Britain's best dumplings at the Golden Chopsticks Awards this week.

The national awards ceremony was created to recognise and celebrate the east and south east Asian restaurants, food businesses and chefs. The event was held in London's Marriott Hotel and Chung Ying - Brum's oldest Chinese restaurant - secured the gong.

Dim sum is a specialty at Chung Ying Cantonese and they've been making fresh steamed dumplings in the city since 1981. Their menu features more than 100 varieties, priced between £5 and £7 a portion. Filling options include steamed king prawn and crab meat (瑤柱香茜餃), spicy pork (豬肉 紅油水餃) and beef balls with coriander (西菜牛肉). All are served in traditional bamboo baskets.

James said: "It was a wild night and we got to rub chopsticks with some famous faces like Gok Wan, Ken Hom and other fantastic restaurateurs such Park Chinois. We knew we had the best dumplings in the country and now it’s official. Our Dim Sum menu has more than 100 varieties and is the largest in the country."

Every month, James hosts a lunch for the Chinese elderly at his restaurant, situated in the heart of Chinatown.
